Domestic Goddess in Training

The cake turned out yummy, but it could have used another half inch or so of that coconut pecan frosting. Let’s just say the cake was very…wholesome. The first step was to bring the applesauce to a boil and then stir in the rolled oats and let it sit (and expand…and thicken) for 20 minutes. It probably would have made a nice face mask at that point.

Anyway, I realized I never posted a picture of the Star Wars onesies my husband and I made. My friend and her husband and sons loved them.

Yay!

Today is the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!! My boys were up and dressed early and within thirty minutes, they were out the door. Both hugged me goodbye and trudged on in. And the stress just fell away. Only kidding. I’m very excited to see how the first day goes, if they both like their teachers, and what we can expect for the coming year.

In other news, I’m feeling very autumnal. Fall is my favorite season, and it always seems as if it rushes by me, with plans and intentions swept to the side in the face of other chores and demands. Well, I’ve decided to extend my writing hiatus slightly. Summer, it seems is veeerrry S-L-O-W in the publishing world, and while I’ve had a few form-letter rejections on my manuscript, I’ve mostly not heard anything. So, I’m going to wait a few more weeks before I decide which tact to take: revise or don’t revise, continue the search for a willing agent or self-publish once again. I’m going to try out some new autumnal (I just like hearing that word in my head) recipes and work on the quilt I started, maybe do a little cleaning and some fall crafts.

I’ve been using my spare time to write since my older son was a baby, so I think I (and they) have missed out on some activities. And they’ll soon be too old (or think they’re too old), so I figure this is my best chance. They both still like decorating cookies and doing fun little projects (so long as it doesn’t interrupt the video game time), so this is our year, baby!

This afternoon I’m thinking of making Apple Oatmeal Cake with Broiled Coconut Pecan Frosting. Fall is looking very good indeed.

Somebunny…

My sister-in-law often sends the boys postcards when she travels, and typically, my older son gets a destination-focused postcard and my younger gets a cutesy one. When they received postcards from Michigan this week, I commented to my husband that his sister still seemed to think my youngest was a bit of a baby. His postcard had a picture of a bunny rabbit, and it said, ‘Somebunny in Michigan loves me.’

After showing the boys their respective postcards, I dutifully hung them on the refrigerator, thinking to leave them for a week or so. Last night at dinner (two days after receiving it), my younger son says, ‘There’s a bunny in Michigan that loves me.’ I muffled my giggle when I realized he was serious and refused to correct him or explain the play on words. Then he says, ‘I wonder how I can find it.’ A strategy session ensued between the brothers. Next he’ll be wanting to plan a trip to Michigan to set up a meet-and-greet.

Maybe my sister-in-law knows what she’s doing (at least in the world of postcards).
