Do you click?

A few months ago, I received an offer in the mail at my press address: start advertising with Google Ad Words and get a $75 credit to the account. Well, always interested in new marketing approaches that will get my book some visibility with more readers, I decided to take advantage of the offer.

The way it works is that Google will match your ad wording and your keyword triggers to Google searches or Google paid-placement ads. Your ad will be displayed if certain criteria are met, and if a person is interested, they will click on the ad, which links to a pre-specifed page (mine is my Amazon book page). If they click, then I pay a fee, up to a pre-specified limit.

I created a few ads, selected some keyword triggers, and then tracked the status online, via the Google Ad Words user interface over the course of a couple of weeks. Here’s what I found:

1. I can’t conclusively tell yet whether sales went up or down on the paperback edition, but I suspect they went up (at least a little) on my ebook. I don’t have up-to-the-minute tracking capability for these electronic sales, so I will have to wait until the end of the month to know for sure.

2. One ad worked MUCH better than the others in terms of getting clicks. But not noticeably better in terms of book sales (as far as I can tell). Evidently the product didn’t live up to the advertising.

So, here’s what I want to know from you guys:

1. Do you pay attention to the ads displayed to the right of the Google search listings? Or the Google ads on blogs?

2. Do you ever click on them?

3. Have you ever purchased anything as a result of clicking on a Google ad?

Also, do you have any suggestions on how I can improve my ad? Here’s the one that’s worked best so far:

Sweet & Sexy Romance

Alyssa Goodnight!

And a few others:

Witty Regency Romance

Thanks for any feedback or suggestions!

A List of Things I Simply Cannot Do

1. Follow any sort of directions where pictures replace words. This includes origami, sewing patterns, directions for assembly, etc.

2. Throw a repeatable football spiral.

3. Play any form of instrument.

4. Whistle on key (or so I’m told).

5. Tolerate any grotesque display of bodily contortions.

6. Have my blood taken without getting woozy.

7. Tolerate any sort of prolonged fidgetiness or unnecessary repetitiveness.
(It might be obvious at this point that my tolerance level is a little low.)

8. Throw caution to the winds.

And my husband has suggested I add…

9. Lose an argument. I like that he can recognize that.

What talents do you wish you had?

Truth or Dare: Are you inked?

Welcome to the first Truth or Dare segment on the blog! Just a heads up: the ‘Dare’ portion of things is going to be a little tame. Because, let’s be honest, I can’t check up on you. We’re just going to have to go on the honor system if the need arises.

So…pretend we’re all lounging on a picnic blanket under a twilight sky. Shoes have been kicked off, shorts and skirts have inched up or down a little as we all shift to get comfortable, and flashes of inky mystery are seemingly everywhere.

Truth or Dare!

What? Truth, you say? Excellent!

Let’s talk tattoos.
I’ve always been curious about them. I wonder about the moments leading up to the decision–seriously what’s the deciding factor? I wonder about the selection process–both how a body part gets selected and what gets weighed in on the design choice.

Do I want everyone to see this?
Is it a For-Your-Eyes-Only deal?
Does it have special significance?
Is it an inside joke or understanding?
Or more of an ‘anything will do, I just want a tattoo’?

So…be honest. Who among you has a tattoo? And where is it, what is it, why did you get it, and do you regret it?

I’ll start. Might as well get the boring among us out of the way.

I don’t have a tattoo and virtually nothing could convince me to get one–I’m too adverse to pain, too squeamish, and too wishy-washy. By the time it was inked on, I’d already be regretting it. The only way I could see myself getting one is if–maybe–I was an Olympic athelete and had the Olympic rings tattooed on my ankle. Maybe. No promises. Then again, I think my Olympic chances have likely passed me by. Unless some new events emerge. Like…number of grocery bags carried in on a single trip from the car. Or number of imaginary V8 head thumps I’ve given out in a one week period.

So…come clean in the comments. Tell your story. You may find it embarrassing, but in all liklihood, everyone else will think you’re way cooler than they do now. Sadly, given my answer, I don’t think that will be the case for me.

What? You chose Dare, you say? Fine. I dare you to get a tattoo.
Too much? Okay fine. I dare you to tell us all about the tattoo you would get if you were a little bit braver, a little bit bolder, and maybe a little bit tipsier.
