GG and SS

I shunned Gilmore Girls the entire time it was on in primetime (well, not exactly shunned–I don’t watch a lot of TV, what I watch is generally with my husband, and he wasn’t enthused. Anyway…), but then sat through marathon viewings of consecutive seasons (with my husband, I might add) until the big finale. That was last summer, sliding into fall, and now, it seems, I’ve latched onto the Gilmore Girls as a ‘fall show’. It was lovely to get caught up in a show where they enjoyed actual seasons, with changing leaves and first snows… So, Season One is on reserve again at the library.

Now on to the point of this post… I was doodling around yesterday, wondering if the show’s writer/producer Amy Sherman-Palladino had recently created any other gems. I stumbled over a very interesting little chat, and being a fan of both Gilmore Girls and Sesame Street, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.

In case you don’t care to follow the link, basically the guy was comparing GG’s wacky Kirk with SS’s kooky Grover, and all I can say is that the man has some pretty solid substantiating evidence. Although…I can’t say that I’m aware of Kirk having a super-power identity. Then again, what do I know? He also compared Luke to Oscar the Grouch, which is really kinda dead-on. These comparisons got me thinking about other similarities between the shows’ characters. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

Ernie and Bert: Lorelai and Emily Gilmore
Ernie is wacky and silly and effusive and Bert is quelling and disapproving (huh? huh? You’re seeing it, aren’t you?)

Big Bird and Snuffleupagus: Rori and Lane
Big Bird is happy-go-lucky and friendly with everyone, and while Lane isn’t exactly an imaginary friend, her whole persona, as far as her mom’s concerned, is imaginary.

Zoe and Elmo: Ms. Patti and Babette…

Sookie: Cookie Monster (when she’s cooking?)

There’s something there, isn’t there? Anybody else have a comparison?
